Amazon started new legal challenges against big Indian retailers over antitrust
Amazon’s India unit filed new appeal lawsuit against the Competition Commission of India (CCI) over the suspension of the deal between Amazon and Future Group, an Indian retailer, which halted the arbitration proceedings between two sides by order of this commission.
Amazon and Future have had a long-term dispute because of the U.S. e-commerce giant's attempts to block the sale of Future's retail assets to Indian market leader Reliance Industries. The CCI suspended Amazon’s deal with Future and subsequently a New Delhi court halted the arbitration proceeding between two parties. Amazon filed an appeal against the CCI suspension decision at India's National Company Law Appellate Tribunal.
Separately, two other sources said, Amazon also filed a challenge in the Supreme Court against the Delhi court decision in which judges said Future-Amazon arbitration proceedings must remain on hold until Feb. 1 in light of the antitrust suspension of the deal.
These filings which embroiled Amazon, Future and Reliance in the dispute are over a battle for retail supremacy in India's booming consumer market.
